Our ASG Podcast host, Sarah J. Rueppel, had a discussion with Christian Brindle, host of the podcasts Everything Medicare and the Seven Figure or Bust and President of Christian Brindle Insurance Services to discuss how agents can level-up their businesses.

What advice would you have for someone who is brand new to the industry?
There are really three pillars that you [agents] have to nail if you want to make it right when you’re coming in as a new agent.
You want to be a sponge as much as you can … I feel like the people who come in that make it, they have a genuine curiosity about Medicare, about the plans, [and] about the carriers.
I think number two, when you first come in, there’s so many agents who don’t understand this is a people business. And your success is going to be measured based on how many people you have conversations with.
[Lastly,] every piece of business you’re going to acquire, any applications you’re going to be able to write, [or] any clients you’re going to be able to obtain are going to cost you either time or money. And formulating a strategy based on what you have more to give [is critical]. Formulate a marketing attack [and] strategy based on, ‘how can I spend my time to acquire new business?’ That’s how you [agents] can really take your business to the next level.
Is there anything else that you recommend agents do once they have a little bit more experience under their belt?
It’s a very valuable thing for agents to learn how to generate their own leads. And no, it doesn’t have to be that complicated. You could start doing seminars every couple of weeks. You know, and advertising them yourself or working with a vendor to advertise them. Seminars are one of the most tried and true ways to grow your business readily. Learning how to market themselves and learning some type of marketing that can allow them to generate their own leads and have control is what separates the agents who go really far from the ones who don’t.
Is there a particular mindset or mantra you live by that has enabled growth?
One thing that has allowed me to be able to do that is diversify. I think you have to go vertical into something first before you try to add layers to it. It’s almost like you’re growing a tree … think about the tree as your business and additional things you’re doing in your business are branches … you can’t have branches without the tree.
It has to connect. It can’t be something totally random and unrelated. Everything we do is related to the insurance business. Everything we do supports and nurtures other parts of the business, and that’s strategic.
